The Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project is an open-source initiative whose objective is to enhance the functionality of websites when viewed on mobile devices.

They are HTML pages in their most basic form, but they have very low file size and a very short loading time because some functions are missing from them.

Accelerated Mobile Pages was developed by Google, Twitter, and several other companies as a reaction to initiatives such as Apple News and Facebook Instant Articles.

Users of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets benefit from the technology that underpins Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) since it enables lighter web pages that load more quickly.

How Does AMP Work?

The AMP framework uses simplified HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and includes a Content Distribution Network (CDN) for delivering pages if desired.

Google has developed a lighter version of HTML known as AMP HTML. This version of HTML does not include many features typically responsible for the sluggish performance of online pages.

AMP cannot use certain tags that you can use on conventional web pages. AMP does not support certain HTML tags, including base, frame, frameset, param, or applet, in addition to input elements like textarea, choose, or option.

AMP-specific tags have been used in place of the previously used img, video, audio, and iframe elements.

The versions of JavaScript and CSS utilized for AMP are likewise restricted versions, which are employed to achieve faster load times.

Due to these limits, it is important to remember that certain design features such as transitions and animations cannot be implemented with AMP.

You can also employ two content delivery networks (CDNs) for AMP to distribute your pages to users of search engines in an even more practical manner. 

The AMP Cache that Google runs is one of these content delivery networks (CDNs), and Cloudflare runs the other.

Accelerated Mobile Pages are stored on a dedicated server just for that purpose. You can navigate to the AMP page from the desktop version by using the rel=”amphtml” element.

In turn, the AMP page includes a canonical tag that references the desktop page. The purpose of this tag is to indicate that the AMP page is the original page and to prevent duplicating content.

A second mobile page version is kept on a server that Google uses for caching websites. A canonical tag establishes a connection between this one and the desktop page. Users of search engines are given access to the AMP page saved on the cache server.

What Is the Importance of AMP in SEO?

Accelerated Mobile Pages were able to use a more visually appealing presentation in Google’s mobile search results in the past.

Mobile devices displayed articles in a carousel format on top of other search results. Google’s June 2021 page experience update brought the desired changes.

However, given that AMP is an open source project, new capabilities are continually being added to it. This has resulted in testing AMPs by major online retailers, and the benefits offered by AMP are progressively becoming interesting for all forms of web content.

What Are the Disadvantages of AMP?

There is one potential drawback of AMP, which is its somewhat complicated deployment. Google provides useful tools and courses, but that does not necessarily indicate that they are easy to use.

Furthermore, Google Analytics is only partially compatible with AMP. There are plenty of options to improve the user experience, including gathering basic data like visitor numbers and engagement.

There are also limitations on the functionality that can be incorporated into the design of your website.

An AMP page, for instance, cannot display a pop-up email form or an opt-in form, as well as social sharing buttons carefully positioned in the sidebar. This may lead to a loss of email subscribers and leads.

Using a Content Delivery Network (CDN) creates a specific reliance since Google’s cache server typically loads Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP).

It is difficult for anyone other than Google to control these servers, creating a dependency that may be detrimental in the long run.

Additionally, there is a potential for data protection issues to arise due to Google’s solution due to the search engine provider’s access to users’ connection data.

There is also the possibility that AMP could be used to spread misleading information. Websites that comply with AMP have Google in their URL, which lends credibility to the site regardless of the actual content.
